American revivalism has often been informed by the idea of being “born again.” A frequent question that you would face back in the 1970’s was “Are you born again?” The question is unsettling. Jesus, in the Greek text, actually says “born from above.” The idea is a metaphor that is only one way of talking about how a person comes into relationship with God. To ask if you are born again is actually redundant. It’s like asking, “Are you a Christian ‘Christian’?” And there is a certain arrogance implied in even asking someone if they are born again. The phrase has often been used as if it were the only true way to be a Christian. Is this the case? Or have we been misled by “revivalism” and evangelists over the decades? What if we born again but born again, and again, and again?
