Engaging Minds & Hearts

Groups

Are you interested in finding groups of like-minded individuals who want to participate in activities, while they grow in friendship and fellowship with each other? First Baptist Church’s small groups for adults provide opportunities for deepening relationships with others in the church. Nothing enriches your worship relationship like knowing you are worshiping with friends. That starts with your stepping forward to join our groups, so you will have a growing number of friends at church ready to welcome you with a smile.

American Baptist Men

AMERICAN Baptist Men at Work - First Baptist Church of Peoria Missions

If you are handy – don’t mind using a bit of elbow grease – or would enjoy working side-by-side with other men in the church, the ABMen is for you.

WHEN WE MEET:

We meet the first Saturday of each month at 8 am for breakfast, fun and fellowship. This is followed by work projects. Our focus is our church home; repairing, and cleaning. Our projects include these or anything else identified by our Board of Trustees as needed to maintain our church building and grounds.

SKILLS NEEDED:

We have been lucky to have several ABMen who bring carpentry and plumbing skills to the group. Don’t feel like that is required. Many of us just bring a willing spirit. All levels of ability are welcome.

WHY WE ENJOY IT:
  • Like any time that men work on projects together, long-term friendships have been formed through participation in ABMen.
  • Members express a sense of satisfaction while walking through the church and recognizing their contributions make a material difference in our church facility.
  • Several of us have learned through participation how to do projects we might never have tackled on our own.

In addition to our own church home, our ABMen is affiliated with two national organizations.

  • ABM of the Great Rivers Region
  • American Baptist Men USA

If you have an interest in helping on a larger scale, through ABMen, you have the opportunity to volunteer to be the “hands and feet of Jesus” on projects such as these:

  • ABMen’s Disaster Relief Teams helping clean up and rebuild after hurricanes, floods and tornadoes from Puerto Rico to Texas and from Peoria to Baton Rouge.
  • Work projects ranging from cleanup at Lake Springfield Baptist Camp and Green Lake Baptist Camp (in Wisconsin) to repair projects at Judson College and University of Illinois Baptist Student Center.

These are never required. Just opportunities for those who have the time and interest to pursue them.

Heartwarming Hats

Heart Warming Hats - First Baptist Church of Peoria

In April of 2006, a few ladies from First Baptist got together to start making hats for children in our local community. The intention was provide the hats as an additional Christmas gift to those children whose name appeared on our “Helping Tree”. Our efforts have succeeded beyond expectations and today we have close to 15 ladies making these wonderful gifts for the children.

In 2019, the Heartwarming Hats group celebrated a several significant milestones. The group has made 10,535 hats, 277 mittens, 260 scarves, 99 booties, 40 4-piece “preemie” sets, 156 (+) afghans and 306 (+) baby blankets!

If you are interested in joining our group, we would love to have you. We meet in the FBC Connections Room on the second Monday of each month at 11:00 a.m. New members are always welcome and we can teach you how to make hats if needed.

Movie Lovers Group

Movie Lovers Group - First Baptist Church of Peoria
Are you a movie buff? Do you enjoy discussing the quality of the plots and actors in the latest movies? Perhaps the ”Movie Lover’s Group” is something you would enjoy.

The Group meets once every other month at a member’s home to discuss a variety of movies. Members attend the preselected movies either on their own or with others from the group prior to the group meeting. All opinions are always welcome and expected which typically results in a lively discussion.

A “thumbs up / thumbs down” is taken after each movie is reviewed. The result is that we all learn to appreciate the themes and attributes of each movie we view in a deeper manner. Refreshments are always included with each meeting.

Visitors are always welcome to sit in on one of the Thursday night meetings to determine if this is something they would like to join. Contact Bob and Lynelle Ryan at 309-444-1936 for more detailed information. Join us for a good time, good conversation, and good fellowship!
